Talisman Series
As a child in Ireland I was taught to say a prayer each morning and give thanks
for another day and for getting through the long dark night alive. As a protector
against evil I used to wear a saint's talisman, a scapular, on a neckpiece next
to my skin.
I'm forever struck, in spite of all the dangers, by what gets us all through the
night. What is this thirst for life? What keeps us going in spite of all the
doomsayers and violence profiteers especially since 9/11.
The Talisman Series is inspired not only by traditional amulets and charms, but
by objects I find in Nature; items that exude an otherworldly energy, odd forms
that are somewhat familiar, bursting with life, suspended in a safe amniotic-like
fluid.
They have a clear regenerative power that is protective.
They are as much guided by the wisdom of traditional folklore and animism as
they are by more conventional therapies;
whatever we use to get-by in a crisis.
