Interference Portraits

Painted in a style similar to static interference on a TV as an image materializes,
'Hearth Attack' shows a human face registering total shock; he is reacting to the
unbelievable pace of change through which our culture is being forced. The title
is a deliberate misspelling of the term 'heart attack'. Whereas the hearth has been
the traditional center of the home for millennia, many of us are losing our
sense of stability as we lose our jobs and even our homes. The inspiration comes
from an ongoing series of expressive photos I take of figurines at flea markets
where I search for indirect signs of familiarity and otherness.
