Earth Mother Goddess Series

In the same way as psychiatrists use dolls to re-enact scenes of
distress, I use images of curious dolls, effigies, statues, and figurines
to address issues of contemporary urban trauma.

In my cultural and anthropological explorations of Flea Markets,
Thrift and Antiques Shops, Museums, and other Cabinets of Curiosity
I look for indirect but nevertheless universal signs of otherness,
of ancient spirituality and manifestations of Divinity,
of the Earth Mother Goddess, Mother Earth and the Divine Feminine.

I photograph the effigies first in traditional portrait style. Then I sketch
the figures in graphite and watercolor and arrive at that particular
facial expression that caught my eye in the first place, invariably one
of protection and power, which I then articulate in paint on canvas.

I am a firm believer in the protective power of talismans. In an age of
change and compromise my paintings emit strong seductive feelings
of love, compassion, wisdom and justice.
